SNAP AND COUPONS: VENDOR INFORMATION

To uphold our market mission to make fresh, healthy food accessible to everyone in our community; all qualifying food vendors are required to accept Market Tokens (SNAP), WIC Coupons and Senior Coupons. Please see below a list of qualifying items and how to get certified to accept WIC and Senior Coupons.


You must accept Market Tokens (SNAP program) if you sell:

  • breads and cereals;
  • fruits and vegetables;
  • meats, fish and poultry; and
  • dairy products.
  • Seeds and plants which produce food for the household to eat
  • Soft drinks, candy, cookies, snack crackers, bakery items, ice cream, jams and spreads, etc.


You must accept Coupons and be a certified vendor through MDAR if you sell:

  • Fresh, locally produced and unprocessed fruits, vegetables and fresh, cut herbs, and honey


Qualifying Vendor Requirements

  • The name and location of the farm or business must be clearly posted
  • Prices must be clearly posted for all eligible items being sold
  • Any eligible item not produced by the seller must be labelled clearly with the product origin
  • A sign must be posted at your booth that Coupons and Market Tokens are accepted (market will provide Market Token posters, MDAR will provide Coupon posters)
  • Scales used at the market must be inspected and sealed annually by the Sealer of Weights and Measures
  •  All items offered for sale at the Market must be first quality, unless they are expressly posted as “seconds"
  • Vendors are required to comply with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations


Notes

  • Market Tokens do not expire
  • Coupons expire on 10/31/24 and must be submitted for reimbursement prior to that date
  • Coupons come in $5 increments and Market Tokens in $1 increments
  • Never give change for coupons or tokens, or exchange cash for coupons or tokens
  • All customers should receive courteous service in accordance with 
  • Do not accept coupons or tokens, that are damaged, voided or appear to be counterfeit

MARKET TOKENS

The Market Tent handles SNAP transactions and issues market tokens to eligible customers. Customers will present to vendors Marlborough Farmers Market Tokens in $1 increments. These are the only SNAP tokens that may be used at the market. Vendors may not issue change for tokens.


All eligible vendors will receive a piece of paper at the beginning of each market to record their SNAP tokens received. At the end of each market a market volunteer will confirm the token count. The vendor will receive a reimbursement check at the following market or a check will be mailed to the address provided on the slip.


Note that market tokens do not expire and may be used at future markets


Households CANNOT use Market Tokens to buy:

  • Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes or tobacco
  • Any nonfood items, such as:
  • pet foods
  • soaps, paper products
  • household supplies
  • Vitamins and medicines
  • Food that will be eaten in the store
  • Hot foods

WIC & Senior Coupons

The Market itself is unable to accept WIC and Senior Coupons so the market requires qualifying vendors to be certified to accept these benefits.

 

WIC Eligible Items

  • Fresh, locally produced and unprocessed fruits, vegetables and fresh, cut herbs


Senior Coupon Eligible Items

  • Fresh, locally produced and unprocessed fruits, vegetables and fresh, cut herbs, and honey
